In an event that has left maritime experts and local authorities baffled, the cargo vessel M/S Valka was discovered drifting aimlessly in the open sea on July 15, 1985. The vessel, which had been transporting timber from the Maraheim Harbor to the Northern Territories, was found by a passing trawler with no crew on board. The only survivor, deckhand Ivan Petrovic, was later found in a life raft with a substantial sum of money.

Discovery and Initial Investigation

The M/S Valka was located approximately 70 nautical miles off the coast of Maraheim by the fishing vessel Sea Breeze. The trawler's crew was alarmed to find the ship devoid of life, yet showing clear signs of a violent altercation. Blood stains, personal belongings, and signs of struggle were evident throughout the ship, suggesting a chaotic and possibly deadly event had taken place.

Ivan Petrovic, the sole survivor, was discovered adrift in a life raft with 200,000 in local currency. Petrovic initially claimed that an engine fire had forced the crew to abandon ship. However, upon further questioning, he revealed a different narrative: according to Petrovic, two crew members had attacked the captain and first mate with knives, resulting in a deadly brawl.

Forensic Findings and Court Proceedings

A thorough investigation conducted by Maraheim's maritime authorities revealed even more unsettling details. Blood splatters and torn clothing suggested multiple points of conflict throughout the vessel. The captain’s cabin was ransacked, and there were clear attempts to set fire to the ship’s engine room. Despite these findings, no bodies were ever recovered, complicating the investigation.

During the trial, Petrovic maintained his version of events, claiming self-defense. He described a desperate fight for survival against the attackers, whom he eventually overpowered. His narrative, however, was met with skepticism due to the lack of corroborating evidence and the significant amount of money found in his possession. Despite these doubts, the court could not definitively prove his guilt, leading to his acquittal.

Aftermath and Continuing Mystery

Following his release, Ivan Petrovic returned to Maraheim, where he reportedly lived a quiet life. Efforts to uncover the full truth behind the M/S Valka incident have been inconclusive, leaving the case shrouded in mystery. The ship itself was later refurbished and returned to service, but the events of that fateful journey continue to haunt the maritime community.
